Grammys Add 'Best Asian Pop Music Performance' for 2027: K-Pop's First Purpose-Built Grammy Category

The Recording Academy announced on June 17, 2026 that the 69th Grammy Awards — set to air live on ABC, Disney+, and Hulu on February 7, 2027 — will include a new Grammy 2027 Best Asian Pop Music Performance category: the first purpose-built Grammy recognition for K-pop, J-pop, and C-pop in the ceremony's history. The category joins four other new additions as part of the Academy's most significant structural expansion in years, and it arrives at a moment when K-pop's commercial footprint on global charts is impossible to ignore.

The Best Asian Pop Music Performance category will recognise artistic excellence in recordings that originate from or are widely recognised within Asian markets, including K-pop, J-pop, and C-pop, provided they feature meaningful use of one or more Asian languages. Songs recorded primarily in English are explicitly excluded — a threshold the Academy has not yet quantified as a percentage, but which effectively rules out tracks where Korean, Japanese, or Mandarin appears only in a brief hook or bridge. The eligibility window runs from August 31, 2025 through August 28, 2026, and nominations are scheduled to be announced on November 16, 2026.

The language threshold matters enormously for how K-pop's 2026 releases map onto the category. BTS's 'ARIRANG' album — released in March 2026 and already the fastest-selling K-pop album of all time — is recorded predominantly in Korean, making it clearly eligible. Several of the year's other major releases, including aespa's 'LEMONADE,' LE SSERAFIM's 'PUREFLOW Pt.1,' and TWICE's 'THIS IS FOR,' are similarly Korean-language led and fall within the window. By contrast, acts that have leaned heavily into English-language recording for crossover positioning will need to evaluate track-by-track whether individual songs clear the threshold.

BTS arrives at this moment with five previous Grammy nominations and no win — a tension that has defined the group's relationship with the Recording Academy across five years of nominations. With 'ARIRANG,' they submit the most commercially dominant K-pop album since the category's eligibility window opened: 110 million Spotify streams, 4.17 million first-week sales, a Billboard 200 top-ten debut, and a world tour now running through more than 30 cities across three continents. The Grammy 2027 Best Asian Pop Music Performance category creates, for the first time, a lane where 'ARIRANG' competes on terms designed for it rather than against the full breadth of global pop.

Other strong contenders within the eligibility window include aespa's 'WDA (Whole Different Animal)' featuring G-Dragon — a track that topped Melon on release day and drew crossover attention for its production — alongside IVE, BLACKPINK's individual members, and the wave of fourth-generation acts whose 2026 output has been chart-defining. The breadth of eligible material underscores why the Academy's move is significant: the new category is not a single-horse race but a reflection of how densely competitive K-pop's major release cycle has become.
