Ilsan, South KoreaKim Nam-joon taught himself English largely through the American sitcom Friends and became a self-taught rapper before joining Big Hit Entertainment in 2010. He was the first member recruited for what would become BTS, and the only member to join via the company's direct rap audition pipeline. As BTS's leader and primary songwriter, he holds over 100 writing and production credits. His address to the United Nations General Assembly in 2018 — delivered in Korean — was watched by tens of millions and described by diplomats as one of the most effective pieces of youth-focused public diplomacy in recent memory.
