HYBE, SM Entertainment, JYP Entertainment, and YG Entertainment — South Korea's four dominant K-pop labels — announced on July 27, 2026 that they are jointly launching Fanomenon, an 11-day K-pop festival and fandom awards ceremony scheduled for December 2-12, 2027 in Seoul. The event, conceived by J.Y. Park as a direct rival to Coachella, is backed by a public-private partnership with the South Korean government and is designed to position Korea as the world's capital of fandom culture. It is the first time the four major agencies have collaborated on a single cultural event at this scale.
WHAT IS FANOMENON — AND WHY THE AWARDS GO TO FANS, NOT ARTISTS
Fanomenon is structured differently from every existing K-pop awards ceremony. The central prize — called the Fandemonium — is awarded not to the artist but to the artist's fans; the artist accepts the award on the fandom's behalf. The Top 10 K-pop fandoms will be recognised based on extensive data analysis measuring fan activity and influence across platforms. The inversion is deliberate: where existing award shows treat fans as spectators, Fanomenon reframes fandom itself as the subject of cultural recognition. Alongside the awards, the 11-day programme includes three-day concert runs (December 3–5 and December 10–12) and four days of awards ceremonies.
SEOUL ARENA, KINTEX, AND A PROJECTED 1 TRILLION WON ECONOMIC IMPACT
The main performances and ceremonies will be held at Seoul Arena, the country's new 28,000-capacity venue opening in Chang-dong in May 2027 — making Fanomenon one of the arena's first major anchor events. Additional exhibitions, fan activations, and cultural programmes will run simultaneously at KINTEX in Goyang. According to the Korea Culture and Tourism Institute, the 2027 event alone is projected to attract approximately 520,000 visitors including 200,000 international tourists, generating an estimated 1 trillion won in economic activity — a figure that underscores why the South Korean government is participating directly in the venture.
THE LOS ANGELES EXPANSION: K-POP'S COACHELLA MOMENT IN MAY 2028
Following the Seoul debut, Fanomenon is scheduled to take its Coachella-inspired music festival format to Los Angeles in May 2028. The LA expansion marks the first time a K-pop industry event of this scale will be produced on American soil as a flagship event rather than a touring iteration of a Seoul-origin programme. For the Big Four labels, the LA timing is also strategic: it positions Fanomenon within the US festival season, directly competing with the outdoor festival circuit during the same month Coachella traditionally runs.
